Bob Nault press release re: Coast Guard services in Kenora

(KENORA) June 15, 2017 - The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), issued the following statement regarding the operation of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) in Kenora:

"Over the past several weeks, I've heard from many constituents regarding how much they value the services provided by the CCG who are currently working on Lake of the Woods. I conveyed these concerns to the Minister's office directly and I am very pleased that those concerns were heard and acted on. Today, I want to reassure everyone that that there will be no reduction in the CCG presence in inland waterways.

"Simply put, the proposed changes to operations at inland waterways, specifically those on Lake of the Woods, are no longer under review and will continue to function in the future as they have in the past.

"As a lake user myself, I am pleased to see that the monitoring of buoys and other navigational aids used on Lake of the Woods will stay in place. Boaters can be assured that reefs and other obstructions will be well marked so that the lake will be a safe and enjoyable boating destination for tourists and residents alike.

"I am also pleased to share that our government has invested nearly $3 billion into the core operations for Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and CCG Oceans Protection Plan, following a comprehensive program review. With these new investments, Canadians will soon see a noticeable difference in the services they will receive from the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

"This government is firmly committed to not simply replacing programs that have been lost in years past, but the new investments will also help DFO/CCG build the programs and services that Canadians will need well into the future."

Background:

With these investments, Canadians will see a noticeable difference in the services they receive from DFO/CCG.
