Family Day at Coney Island, August 14

We’ve got lots of activities planned, all with a green theme to help us learn about the environment and have fun doing it.

Oak Hammock Marsh will be here with their Geo-caching Program (read scavenger hunt with a GPS)
Build your own bee nesting box
Get creative with rock painting and face painting
Get your team together and compete in our sandcastle building contest — using only natural materials
And just enjoy a family day on the beach

Schedule of Events

All Day

Artists’ Corner — Bring a special rock and make it your own.
Paints will be supplied.
Build a Bee Box — Help them find a home and help your garden.
All supplies will be on hand thanks to Kenora Home Hardware.
Swimming & Relaxing on Coney Beach

10:30 am sharp

Oak Hammock Marsh Geo-Caching — Get set for a modern day scavenger hunt! We’ll be heading out at 10:30 on the dot so don’tbe late. Space is limited, so register early.

12:00 pm

Bar-B-Q Lunch is served — thanks to the Kenora Rotary Club and our local Canada Safeway. Note the Coney Island concession stand will be open in case there’s something we missed.

1:30 – 2:30 pm

Family Sand-Castle Building Contest — Use your hour wisely, get creative and impress the judges! Only natural materials will be allowed as part of your castles.

3:00 pm

Wrap Up and Prizes — awarded to the sand-castle winners.

Summer’s here and your Association has a full slate of activities to entertain and educate members. We’re back with some of your favourites and have added two new events in response to member requests.

Make this season the year to take advantage of your LOWDPOA membership by joining us for one or all of the following events.

Wednesday, July 7 9:30 to 11:30 Gardening the Forest NEW!
Dyke Williams, long-time LOW sailor, cottager and tree expert will be on hand to teach all the whys and hows of forest gardening. We’ll learn the importance of trees in the ecosystem, how to plant and care for them, the role of fire in the wilderness, the impact of climate change and more.

Wednesday, July 7 9:30 – 4:30 pm Boating Safety Course
Boating Safety Course presented by Nuttall Boating Safety. The deadline has passed and if you haven’t already got your ‘card’, now is the time to take advantage of this in-depth training course. Year after year, Jack McKenzie can fill a room with new and not so new boaters who’d like to safely venture further afield on beautiful Lake of the Woods. Bring your charts or purchase them at the seminar.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 9:30 – 4:30 Kid’s Day Camp at Camp Stephens LOWDPOA
Take the whole family over to Camp Stephens to enjoy a full day of fun and learning with their experienced camp leaders. Pick-up is at the Kenora Main St. Dock at 9:30 am sharp. There are no docking facilities at the camp so be sure to be on time – you don’t want to miss your ride!

Saturday, August 14 10:30 – 3 Living Green at the Lake Family Day NEW!
Come on over to Coney Island Beach to learn about the environment and have fun doing it! We’ll be geo-caching, building bee nests, creating natural art and competing for the very best sand castle. A bar-b-q lunch will be served thanks to Canada Safeway and the Kenora Rotary Club.

May 22: Red Pine Seedling Pick Up Day

Don’t forget to pick up your Red Pine Seedlings on Saturday, May 22 between 10 am and noon. We know it’s a busy weekend – opening the cottage and getting ready for a great summer, but please take the time to stop in at your pick-up location. Volunteers will be distributing throughout the district at the following locations:

Pinewood Restaurant, Granite Lake
Clearwater Bay Fire Hall
Minaki Marina
Two Bears Marina, Keewatin
The Blue Heron, Kenora
Longbow Lake Fire Hall, Storm Bay Road

Pine Portage Bay Homeowners Assoc. Meeting May 23, 2010

Pine Portage Bay Homeowners Association is hoping to reactivate, after being dormant for the past 20 years, and has called a meeting of interested property owners in the immediate area (not limited to Pine Portage Bay).

The meeting is scheduled for:
Sunday, May 23 at 2:00 pm
Longbow Lake Firehall
Highway 17 east and Storm Bay Road

The meeting is primarily to discuss:

Do the residents of the area want re-establish a political group to protect their interests and the environment surrounding our properties?
We are all aware of the intrusion of government into more of our lives and non-organized properties.
Most (if not all) of the residents are concerned with the Northern Harbour proposed expansion on public lands.
If the answers to these concerns are positive, then we would use this meeting to ask for volunteers to join the executive.
Organizational efforts will follow
